Where the gothic look comes from

The style commonly called "gothic" text online is more precisely known as blackletter or Fraktur — a family of typefaces used across German and English printing for centuries, and instantly recognisable from old newspaper mastheads, metal band logos, and tattoo lettering. Unicode includes a full block of Fraktur letters (originally added for mathematical notation, like most of the other styles here), which is what this generator draws from.

Regular vs. bold Fraktur

The regular Gothic / Fraktur style has thinner, more ornate strokes; Bold Gothic is heavier and reads more clearly at small sizes, which makes it the better pick for a username or profile name that needs to stay legible in a list. Five capital letters — C, H, I, R, and Z — sit in a separate older Unicode block for historical reasons and can look marginally different in weight from the rest; it's a known quirk of the standard rather than an error in the generator.
